Clash of the Titans

Over the 30 plus years I have been a member of the club I have only won its most prestigious event once. I cannot remember  what the year was but it was a long time ago. To win the clubs Freewheeling Competition  requires  dedication, technique, skill and a great deal of specialist training. This year’s winner holds the record number of victories which, I believe, now stands at 14. I venture to say this total will never be beaten in my lifetime.

When I bumped into Eddie O’Brien at Cedar Galleries a few weeks ago and he said he was making a comeback and would be riding this years event my heart sank. Eddie looked in tip top condition  and  I knew my chances of repeating my victory many years ago had gone.

A mixed bag of riders were on the start line at Bleasdale for the event including Raleigh’s Matt Holmes.
Lenny Collins was looking good but was disappointed with his effort.
Defending Champion Allan Stark could only manage third place
Club Hill Climb Champion – Dave Morgan could not complete the magical double.
The real battle was between one time club sponsor Rob Whitfield and the man himself Eddie O’Brien.
The result was never in doubt with Eddie winning by a good 3 feet (1 metre) with Rob a creditable second.

There were several other also ran’s, including myself, who were way back and will need to train hard to stand any chance next year but I am confident with perseverance and dedication I can do it again.

Cobbled Hey Café was the venue for the after event celebrations.
